Early Life and Beginnings
Griezmann began playing football at his hometown club, UF Mâconnais. Several French academies turned him down after trials, largely because of his small frame at the time. When an opportunity arose in Spain, his parents were initially reluctant to let him go, but they agreed after receiving reassurances. That decision changed his life.
Real Sociedad (2009–2014)
His senior career began at Real Sociedad, where he won the Segunda División in his first season. He made 180 league appearances for the club and scored 46 goals.
Atlético Madrid: Becoming a Legend
In 2014, Atlético Madrid signed him for a then club-record fee of around €30 million. During his first spell, he won:
- The Spanish Super Cup (2014)
- The UEFA Europa League (2018)
- The UEFA Super Cup (2018)
He was nominated for the Ballon d’Or and the Best FIFA Men’s Player award in both 2016 and 2018.
Barcelona (2019–2021)
Griezmann moved to Barcelona in 2019 and won a Copa del Rey there, but he never fully found his best rhythm. In 2021, he returned to Atlético on loan, and the move was later made permanent.
Atlético Madrid’s All-Time Top Scorer
Back in Madrid, he rewrote the club’s history books. In January 2024, he scored his 174th goal against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final, passing Luis Aragonés to become Atlético’s all-time leading scorer. In 2025, he became the first player to reach 200 goals for the club in competitive matches.
France National Team and the World Cup
Griezmann was a key member of the France side that won the 2018 World Cup. He scored 44 goals for Les Bleus, placing him among the country’s all-time top scorers. He was also named Player of the Tournament and won the Golden Boot at UEFA Euro 2016.
New Chapter: Orlando City
In March 2026, Griezmann announced he would join MLS club Orlando City after the end of the 2025–26 season. He signed a two-year contract with an option for a third year. Saying goodbye to Atlético, he said his present would remain red and white until the end of the season, and his heart would stay that way forever.
Playing Style
Griezmann is known for much more than goals. His main strengths are:
- Intelligent movement and finding space
- Precise passing and chance creation
- Tireless defensive work
- Set-piece quality
